A Short History

Albuquerque was founded in 1706 around what is now Old Town, near the Rio Grande. When the railroad arrived in 1880, a new downtown grew up along the tracks to the east, and early residential additions such as Huning Highlands filled in around it. The KiMo Theatre on Central Avenue, opened in 1927 in the Pueblo Deco style, is still a city-run performance venue.

Getting Around

The Alvarado Transportation Center at 100 1st St SW is the hub for the New Mexico Rail Runner, Amtrak's Southwest Chief, ABQ Ride buses and Greyhound. I-25 and I-40 meet just northeast of downtown, so most of the metro area is a short drive away.
